CELTIC were yesterday counting the cost of their harrowing Champions League exit at the hands of FC Basle in Switzerland on Wednesday night.

The inquest has already begun into how they failed to protect a 3-1 cushion over the Swiss side from the first leg which will cost the club £10million for missing out on the group stages.

Their hopes of making progress from last season have also fallen by the wayside as Martin O’Neill’s plans to make new additions to his squad before the transfer window closes have been badly hit.
