AIL round-up: Hicks lands winner as Cork Con down champions St Mary's

Round 3 of the Energia All-Ireland League delivered another dramatic afternoon, with unbeaten records falling, thrilling finishes and early-season contenders strengthening their positions across the divisions.

Clontarf moved top of Division 1A with a commanding 61-15 victory over previously unbeaten UCD at Castle Avenue. Peter Maher, Brian Deeny and Matthew Brennan helped establish a 26-3 half-time lead before the hosts completed a nine-try demolition, with Conor Kelly kicking seven conversions.

Lansdowne claimed their first victory, overturning a 19-7 half-time deficit to defeat previously unbeaten Old Belvedere 35-26. Dylan O’Keeffe scored twice, while Michael Moloney converted all five Lansdowne tries.

Defending champions St Mary’s College also suffered their first defeat, losing 25-24 to Cork Constitution at Temple Hill. Dylan Hicks landed a stoppage time penalty to secure Con’s first win after a dramatic contest.

Terenure College returned to winning ways with a 34-26 victory over Old Wesley, Griffin Culver’s late try proving decisive. Young Munster made it consecutive victories with a 32-14 success over Ballynahinch, scoring five tries to leave the visitors without a league point.

In Division 1B, Naas and Highfield joined Nenagh Ormond at the summit on ten points following impressive bonus-point victories.

Naas overwhelmed previously unbeaten Blackrock College 54-14 at Forenaughts, running in eight tries, including a Paddy Taylor double. Highfield were equally impressive, defeating Dublin University 57-29 in a 13-try thriller. Captain Jamie Shanahan completed a first-half hat-trick, while Travis Coomey crossed twice.

Nenagh Ormond’s unbeaten start ended with a narrow 23-21 home defeat to Instonians. Tries from Oli Clark, Bevan Prinsloo and Adam Boyd secured the visitors first victory despite a determined Nenagh comeback.

City of Armagh climbed the standings with a 24-12 bonus-point victory over UCC, while MU Barnhall edged Garryowen 28-24 at Dooradoyle, Neil Byrne contributing 18 points.

Cashel remain the only side in Division 2A with a maximum 15 points following a 33-12 victory over Galwegians. Timothy Townsend crossed twice as the leaders secured their third consecutive bonus-point win.

Ballymena made it three wins from three with a 26-19 victory over Queen’s University, while Dungannon maintained their perfect winning record, defeating previously unbeaten Corinthians 27-7 away. Peter Nelson contributed 17 points for the Ulster side.

Wanderers claimed their first victory with a 32-24 success over Shannon, Lexi O’Connor scoring twice before Jordan Conroy’s late try helped seal the result. UL Bohemian also opened their winning account, edging Greystones 38-34 in an entertaining contest.

Division 2B North saw Ballyclare, Enniskillen and Malone maintain perfect 15-point records, while Clogher Valley remain unbeaten just one point behind.

Ballyclare produced an extraordinary attacking display to defeat Malahide 62-41 in a 16-try encounter. Alex Darrah and Joel McBride both crossed twice as the leaders secured another maximum return.

Newly promoted Enniskillen continued their remarkable introduction to Energia AIL rugby, defeating Navan 50-19 for a third successive bonus-point victory. Michael Rooney scored twice as the hosts ran in eight tries.

Malone maintained their perfect start with a 32-26 victory over Skerries, Sam Green and Cameron McCaughey both completing doubles. Clogher Valley edged Banbridge 25-24 in another dramatic finish, David Maxwell landing a 79th-minute penalty to preserve their unbeaten record. Sligo recorded their first victory, defeating Rainey 29-10 with Shane O’Hehir and Tane Leatherby both scoring twice.

In Division 2B South, Clonmel and Old Crescent continued their outstanding starts, both collecting maximum points from their opening three fixtures.

Clonmel were convincing 40-7 winners away to Enniscorthy, with Jason Monua and captain Henry Buttimer both crossing twice in a six-try performance. Old Crescent were equally impressive, running in eight tries to defeat Dolphin 54-22 at Virgin Media Park. Ben Daly, Brian Molloy and John Lyons each completed doubles as Crescent maintained their perfect record.

Bective Rangers secured consecutive victories with a hard-fought 15-7 win over Midleton. Trailing 7-3 at half-time, the hosts responded through second-half tries from Chris Poole and Tiarnan McCloskey.

Monkstown registered their first victory with a 31-16 success over Bruff, Cian O’Donoghue crossing twice as the hosts overturned a narrow half-time deficit. Buccaneers produced another dramatic finish, snatching a 26-24 victory away to Thomond. The hosts had edged ahead through Evan Cusack’s 77th-minute penalty, but Jack Quinn held his nerve to land the winning kick four minutes into stoppage time, securing Buccaneers’ first victory of the campaign.
