There was plenty for Irish rugby supporters to like when British & Irish Lions chair and tour manager Ieuan Evans finally got around to announcing Andy Farrell’s squad for this summer’s 10-game mission to Australia.

The Ireland and Lions head coach, entrusted with the task of beating Joe Schmidt’s Wallabies over three Test matches in July and early August, neatly summed up the process of finding the right blend of 38 players from four nations in order to beat an established Southern Hemisphere national team when he said: “If it was easy, we’ve not got a good squad.”
