It’s over. Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle finally broke a 105-day winless streak with a nerve-shredding 29-28 Top 14 win over Bayonne at Stade Marcel Deflandre.

It’s just a win. But for La Rochelle, trapped in a nine-match crisis of confidence since January, it means so much more than the two places up the table they have climbed. It’s breathing space at last. And, it’s light at the end of the tunnel. Astonishingly, O’Gara’s side remain, just about, in touch with the top six. Next season’s fading Champions Cup dream brightened again, a little.
