Terenure captain hails coach Skehan for masterminding Bateman Cup win
Terenure's Aran Egan celebrates with the Bateman Cup
Terenure College captain Harrison Brewer singled out head coach Sean Skehan for his role in their match-winning try against Young Munster in the Energia Bateman Cup final.
Terenure triumphed 22-15 to retain the trophy, becoming the first back-to-back winners since Cork Constitution in 2017, as Jordan Coghlan (52 minutes) and Aran Egan (59) struck for decisive tries.
"'Skehaner' does a lot of stuff in the background trying to manipulate opposition with strike plays. He's very good at that," said second row Brewer, speaking afterwards at Lakelands Park.
"We saw in that second phase that there was going to be that slight gap that 'Ego' (Aran Egan) went straight through. Credit to the coaching staff, they did really well there."
Former Cookie Conor Phillips crossed in the fourth minute to put Skehan's men on course for a 10-8 half-time lead. Sean Rigney drove over from a maul for Young Munster.
Despite number 8 Fintan Coleman's 35th-minute red card for a high tackle, Munsters remained right in the hunt and took a 15-10 lead when Ireland Under-20 star Ruadhan Quinn burrowed over.
However, Terenure finished the third quarter strongly, and having held up Kegan Christian-Goss late on, Brewer gave the honour to two departing players, Conall Boomer and Caolan Dooley, to lift the trophy at the post-match presentation.
"You could certainly feel the Christmas period there in the last couple of minutes," admitted the former Ireland Under-20 international.
"Credit to Cookies, they're a great outfit. You see them up front, as soon as they get into that 22, (they) drive and just play on top of you there.
"It was just trying to manage that period. We talked about it inside, the third quarter was going to be difficult because they were playing on top of us.
"We managed to get through it and then scored that try through 'Ego', which was good. Delighted to win it again."
