England missed the chance to deal New Zealand a psychological blow less than a year out from the World Cup as Stuart Lancaster’s side were beaten 24-21 at Twickenham.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the first half and led 14-11 at half-time thanks to Jonny May’s superb third-minute try which had been temporarily cancelled out by Aaron Cruden’s close-range score.

New Zealand stepped up a gear in the second period, however, and tries from Kieran Read and Charlie Faumuina put the world champions out of sight before a late England penalty try reduced the deficit.
