Santiago Phelan has stepped down as head coach of Argentina, the Argentinian Rugby Union (UAR) confirmed on Monday.

Phelan, who had been in charge of the Pumas for six years, announced his decision to resign to the governing body ahead of the November internationals, where Argentina will play England, Wales and Italy.

The 39-year-old's contract was due to expire in December but he decided to sever ties following the Rugby Championship, in which the Pumas fell to six defeats from six.

A statement on UAR's website said: "Santiago Phelan will not continue his role as head coach of Los Pumas after six years in office.

"During his career as Pumas coach, Santiago Phelan was in charge of 45 matches in which there were 13 wins, one draw and 31 defeats.

"His debut was on June 7, 2008 against Scotland, while his last game in charge was against Australia in the Rugby Championship in 2013."
