Former England rugby skipper convicted of driving at 103mph

Former England captain and coach Martin Johnson has been banned from driving after speeding at more than 100mph.

The Rugby World Cup-winning captain, 43, was pulled over on the M5 in Somerset on August 13.

Taunton Magistrates Court heard Johnson, of Mowsley, near Lutterworth, Leicestershire, was recorded driving at 103mph.

He admitted a charge of speeding and was disqualified from driving for 49 days.

A spokeswoman for the court confirmed: “Mr Johnson was travelling at 103mph on the M5 between junction 23 and 22 at Puriton in Somerset.

“Mr Johnson entered a guilty plea at the earliest opportunity.

“He was fined £800, costs of £35 and a victim surcharge of £80. He was also disqualified from driving for 49 days.”

Speaking after the hearing, local road safety campaigner Jane Hofmeister criticised Johnson’s behaviour.

Ms Hofmeister’s daughter Amy, 13, was killed by a speeding driver in Taunton in Somerset in June 2011.

She told the Bridgwater Mercury: “It isn’t a good example from somebody in the public eye. Speed kills – end of. We have speed limits for a reason.”
