Former Australia boss Eddie Jones has been appointed the new head coach of Japan.

The Japanese Rugby Football Union announced the role for Jones today.

The 51-year-old had been linked with the England post following the departure of Martin Johnson.

He replaces New Zealander John Kirwan with Japan.

Jones led the Wallabies to the 2003 World Cup final, where they were beaten by England, before helping coach South Africa to victory four years later.

Jones will take up his new post in April, after completing the season with Japanese side Suntory Sungoliath, his team since 2009.
