Sevens stars named in Wallabies tour squad

Four members of the Australian Sevens team have been included in a 36-man Wallabies squad for their upcoming tour of Hong Kong and Europe which includes a tie against Munster.

The Sevens team won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and Wallabies head coach Robbie Deans was clearly impressed with what he saw.

Sevens skipper Pat McCutcheon, half-back Nick Phipps, winger Lachie Turner and winger/full-back Luke Morahan were today named in the touring party.

Turner is the only one of the four to have earned a Wallabies cap, although Morahan featured in a non-cap midweek match against Cardiff last year.

McCutcheon, 23, played for the Australian Barbarians against England earlier this year while Phipps, 21, will back up Will Genia and Luke Burgess in the half-back position.

Meanwhile, Van Humphries, 34, could make history as he attempts to become the oldest player to ever debut for Australia.

He and Nathan Sharpe are the only two players over 30 in an otherwise youthful squad.

Other uncapped players in the squad are Brumbies centre Pat McCabe and Queensland Reds loose forward Scott Higginbotham, who were both included in Australia’s Tri-Nations squad earlier this year.

Mark Chisholm and Ben Alexander are also included after recovering from knee injuries.

The tour begins in Hong Kong as the Wallabies clash with the All Blacks in the last Bledisloe Cup Test of the season.

They will then play Wales, England, Italy and France in Test matches while taking on Leicester and Munster in midweek matches.

The squad will be cut to 30 players after the match against Munster before the final two Tests against Italy and France.

The Wallabies will depart for Hong Kong on October 23.
