Dermody extends London Irish stay

London Irish prop Clarke Dermody has signed a new two-year deal which will keep him at the Madejski Stadium until June 2012.

The move is a major boost for the Exiles as they prepare for Saturday’s Heineken Cup clash with defending champions Leinster at Twickenham.

The 29-year-old former All Black has impressed with his scrummaging ability and workrate around the field since joining the Guinness Premiership club from Super 14 outfit the Highlanders in 2007, helping London Irish to challenge for honours domestically and in Europe.

Head coach Toby Booth said: “Clarke has established himself as one of the best loose head props in the Guinness Premiership. His ability as an outstanding front row exponent and as a leader is fundamental to the success of London Irish going forward.

“We’re delighted that he has re-signed for another two seasons.”

Dermody admitted he was only too happy to commit his future to the club.

“London Irish has lived up to my expectations since I arrived in October 2007,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed being part of a talented and ambitious squad that is committed to playing attractive rugby, and one that can and will win silverware soon.

“My wife and son have also appreciated the family culture that exists around the club and that has been an important factor in our decision to stay.”
