St Mary's earn points thanks to last-gasp penalty

A last-minute penalty by full-back Gavin Dunne gave St Mary's College a hard-earned win in the atrocious weather at Dooradoyle, though the pitch held up well.

Dunne, who has impressed since his transfer from UCC in the summer, fired unbeaten St Mary's ahead with a penalty after eight minutes.

Garryowen's sole response was a penalty by out-half Gerry Hurley after 33 minutes, and Dunne's late effort was enough to see the Dubliners claim their third win of the Division 1A campaign.

The three-point victory also saw them lift the Shay Deering Memorial trophy afterwards, which is competed for whenever the two clubs meet.

Blackrock, Mary's and Dolphin, the three sides left with 100% records in the division, have opened up a six-point gap on the chasing pack.

Scorers:

Garryowen: Pen: Gerry Hurley

St. Mary’s College: Pen: Gavin Dunne; Drop: Gavin Dunne

HT: Garryowen 0 St. Mary’s College 3
