IRFU head congratulates Irish Lions
Irish rugby's top official has congratulated the 14 Irishmen selected for the 2009 British and Irish Lions tour, describing the selection of a record number of Ireland players as "wonderful news" for the game in this country.
“It is wonderful news for the game in Ireland to have such a strong representation in the touring party coming on the back of this year’s historic Grand Slam," said Irish Rugby Football Union President John Lyons.
"Coupled with the upcoming Munster v Leinster Heineken Cup semi-final which guarantees an Irish team in the Heineken Cup final, two Irish teams occupying the top two places in the Magners League, as well as the other significant progress made at underage and women’s levels, it has added another extraordinary achievement to this season”.
“I would like to pass on our sincerest congratulations to the players on behalf of Irish Rugby and wish them the best for the remainder of this season and the forthcoming tour to South Africa”.
