Brace of penalties give Dungannon win

OLD BELVEDERE 5 DUNGANNON 6

Dungannon won for the first time in AIB League Division One since early December as two penalty goals from John McGuckin were enough to see them past Old Belvedere.

McGuckin decided this Anglesea Road tie to end the Tyrone club's run of five straight league defeats.

The result means John Andrews' men are now six points clear of second-from-bottom Young Munster as they head into their final three games.

Old Belvedere opened the scoring with a 24th-minute try from winger Kevin Barden.

But the try scorer missed the conversion from in front of the posts and that was quickly followed by McGuckin's first penalty success.

Belvo had a number of scoring chances in the second half but they knocked on close to the try-line on three separate occasions.

Having to operate with their fourth choice goal-kicker was also a handicap for the Dubliners and in the end, McGuckin held his nerve in the 77th minute to kick the visitors to a precious win.

Scorers:

Old Belvedere: Try: Kevin Barden

Dungannon: Pens: Paul Magee 2

HT: Old Belvedere 5 Dungannon 3
