Defending champions Garryowen lost to their arch rivals Shannon as out-half Tadhg Bennett booted the visitors to victory at Dooradoyle today.

The 21-year-old Bennett popped a late penalty through the posts at Dooradoyle to see Shannon home.

Had Conor Kilroy not had an off-day with the boot, Garryowen would have got the required result but Shannon, who had Ireland prop Marcus Horan making a rare start, were good value.

Kilroy kicked a penalty in each half while winger Pat O'Connor's try had Shannon leading 5-3 at the break.

Scorers: Garryowen: Pens: Conor Kilroy 2

Shannon: Try: Pat O'Connor; Pen: Tadhg Bennett
