The laser-guided boot of Chris Paterson earned Scotland a narrow lead over Italy in a scrappy Pool C eliminator in a wet St Etienne.

The Gloucester utility back was successful with four penalties – two at the start and two at the end of the half – to keep his flawless tournament record going.

Italy came back from an early 6-0 deficit to go 10-6 up thanks to an Alessandro Troncon try and a conversion and penalty from David Bortolussi, but their indiscipline was punished by Paterson.
