Thomas reveals injury fears

Wales captain Gareth Jenkins fears he could have played for Wales for the last time after admitting his rib injury could rule him out of the remainder of the World Cup.

Thomas, 33, came off after 22 minutes of his side’s 32-20 defeat to Australia following a clash with Stirling Mortlock.

Results of a scan on Thomas’ damaged rib cartilage are not yet available but the veteran centre, who has already suggested the tournament could see the end of his international career, is not hopeful.

He told the Daily Star: “I’ve had a similar injury before. My gut feeling is that I’m out for six weeks.

“Waiting for confirmation is going to kill me but I think I already know the outcome.

“I’d never retire but, if I’m honest, they should be planning for the next World Cup so they shouldn’t pick me.”

Thomas earned his 99th cap against Australia and could be stranded one short of three figures.

“I wouldn’t want to cheat the cap by being handed a cameo,” he said.

Thomas’ team-mate Sonny Parker is also undergoing a scan on a groin strain but has already been ruled out of his side’s meeting with Japan on Thursday.
