Referee to make statement over Wales game

Chris White, the referee at the centre of the controversial climax to Wales’ 23-20 RBS 6 Nations defeat to Italy, will issue a statement tomorrow.

White angered the Welsh camp by blowing the full-time whistle despite indicating to the players they had enough time to take one final lineout.

Wales had just spurned the opportunity to kick a penalty to level the scores in order to go for a match-winning try.

White, who left the stadium without comment, will spend the morning reviewing the build-up to the incident.

If that process indicates an error was made, Welsh officials anticipate White could issue an apology.
