Williams 'gutted' by controversial defeat

Shane Williams admitted Wales were “gutted” after a controversial end to their RBS 6 Nations clash with Italy.

The visitors trailed 23-20 in Rome when they were awarded a penalty in the dying seconds.

Instead of kicking for goal to tie the scores, Wales kicked to the corner to set up a lineout and potential winning try, only for referee Chris White to blow the final whistle.

Shane Williams, who scored a try in the first half, told BBC1: “We said (to the referee) ’How long do we have.’

“He said ’Ten seconds’ and we asked if we could kick to touch.

“We’re gutted but that’s the way it goes, we can’t complain. Italy played well today.”

Italy’s Sergio Parisse was delighted with the victory, which followed the historic away triumph against Scotland.

“It’s history for Italian rugby today,” Parisse added. “This is a great moment and I’m really enjoying it.”
