Ruddock: Jenkins should recall duo

Grand Slam-winning Wales coach Mike Ruddock believes Colin Charvis and Gavin Henson should be recalled for the Six Nations clash with Italy.

Gareth Jenkins’ side have lost all three games in the championship so far and must defeat the Azzurri in Rome on Saturday week if they are to avoid the wooden spoon.

Ruddock, who masterminded Wales’ memorable clean sweep in 2005, insists Dragons flanker Charvis should have played in Saturday’s 32-21 defeat by France.

He also feels the time is right for out-of-form Ospreys centre Henson to be reinstated to the squad.

“I would definitely consider Colin, either in the starting 15 or in the 22 for Rome,” Ruddock told The Western Mail.

“I think he was unlucky not to make the 22 for Paris because he is a guy who wins possession with his work at rucks and mauls.

“And for a pack who are finding it hard to achieve parity, every bit of ball counts.

“If Gavin is fit, I might include him in the 22 because he offers something different from the bench with his big boot, awareness, passing and all-round versatility.

“Another Osprey, James Hook, had his moments against France, especially when there was possession for Wales early doors.

“He makes things happen and has the potential to develop into a very good player.

“But it is all about taking chances. We missed a few penalties kicks. France kicked theirs and the momentum swung to them.”
