Dwyer: League recruits should be in squad
Former Australia coach Bob Dwyer believes the decision to leave league recruits Ryan Cross and Clinton Schifcofske out of the Wallabies' 47-man training squad was a mistake.
Dwyer, who led the national team to World Cup success in 1991, says that the pair should be in the squad because both players will show their class in the 2007 Super 14's season.
"From what I have seen, they are two guys who should definitely figure in our Cup plans," Dwyer told The Sunday Telegraph.
"Ryan has played the game and is big and strong and Clinton is a real student of the game.
"I guess there is always the possibility that both guys will be added down the track, but if I was in charge I would have named them."
While both players impressed during last month's World XV match against South Africa, Wallabies coach John Connolly believes that both Cross and Schifcofske can figure in World Cup plans if their form warrants selection.
"This squad will be an ongoing process. Both guys could play a very important role in our World Cup plans," Connolly said.
"At the end of the day, it's only a training squad - the guys will largely be working on their fitness, I haven't ruled Ryan or Clinton out.
"I plan to touch base with them throughout the year and if they are playing well during the Super 14 season they will certainly come into consideration."
With the loss of star utility Mat Rogers to league during the week, Connolly says that the selection for players on the backline are up for grabs.
"Losing Mat is a big blow because he could play five-eighth, centre, wing or full back," he said.
"I'll be watching Ryan and Clinton closely, by no means are they out of the picture."
