Former New Zealand fly-half Andrew Mehrtens has applied for South African citizenship to help Harlequins recruit an extra overseas player next season.

Mehrtens, who scored a record 967 points for the All Blacks before moving to Harlequins in the summer, was born in Durban and is looking to exploit a loophole in the regulations.
