Harinordoquy releived to stay involved

France number eight Imanol Harinordoquy was relieved to see his name in the 22-man squad ahead of France’s RBS 6 Nations opener against Scotland at the Stade de France on February 5.

The Biarritz player was one of the most criticised players in Les Bleus’ unimpressive November Test matches.

The French lost 24-14 to Argentina and 45-7 to New Zealand despite a brilliant victory over Australia at the start of their Autumn tour.

Harinordoquy failed to live up to expectations and there were none of his trademark rampaging runs from the back row.

Coach Bernard Laporte admitted after those setbacks that he was contemplating changes but Harinordoquy was reprieved although he may not start the match at his favourite number eight position.

“I am happy to be on the 22-man list to take on Scotland and then England,” Harinordoquy told L’Equipe.

“That is the main thing. But, everything will depend on the game and the tactics Bernard Laporte wants.

“There are several players capable of performing in the back row.”

The giant Basque admits he can no longer be considered an automatic starter.

“Nothing can ever be taken for granted with the French national team, all the players know that,” he added.

“Bernard Laporte has issued a 22-men list and I am rather happy to be on it.”
