Dublin University were denied a third AIB League Division One draw of the season as Clontarf scrum-half Dan van Zyl pocketed a late drop goal winner as the students were edged 14-11 at College Park.

The South African popped up in the fourth minute of injury time to cruelly rob Tony Smeeth's side of a share of the spoils in only their second home game of the campaign.

Medical student Simon Mitchell put on a one-man show for the home side as his 22nd-minute try saw Trinity 8-6 in front at the break.

Fullback Mitchell caught the 'Tarf defence napping as he tapped a quick penalty ala-Ronan O'Gara, to dive over and he tagged on two penalties in either half.

However 'Tarf, who move back into first position with their fifth win from six, kept in the hunt with two Dave McAllister penalties in the first half.

Centre Donovan Rossi's 15-metre sprint over try further boosted their hopes, and with Trinity second row Marc Warburton sin-binned late on, van Zyl, a second half replacement, kicked the north Dubliners to victory.

Scorers: DU: Try: Simon Mitchell; Pens: Mitchell 2

Clontarf: Try: Donovan Rossi; Pens: Dave McAllister 2, Dan van Zyl
