Mackay would consider SRU return

Ousted Scottish Rugby Union chairman David Mackay has revealed that he would consider returning to the job – but only if major changes take place.

Mackay resigned six days ago after the SRU general committee delivered a vote of no-confidence in him and chief executive Phil Anderton and three members of the executive board have also quit since then.

Mackay told the Scottish Daily Mail: “There is still a huge job to do and a huge temptation to say that, even though I have been kicked out, I would never say I would never come back.

“If enough people said they wanted me back, then I would consider it. But it would have to be with the executive team intact and led by Phil Anderton.

“You can produce the best business plan in the world but you need the team to drive that plan and without that there is no point in having a plan.

“But there is no way of going back under the current structure. Basically, I was sacked for not doing as I was told.”

Mackay and Anderton had suggested streamlining the organisation’s decision-making structure and also felt that the running of the national team and three professional clubs should not be left to a committee of amateurs.

The proposals are set to be voted on at a special general meeting on 30 January in time to be implemented in June but such a move would seriously curtail the power of the General Committee which led to the vote of no-confidence.

But Mackay claims they were plotting to remove him as long ago as August.

He added: “They wanted me removed then. I asked them if they were plotting to remove me and they said they were ‘planning’ to remove me and it has been simmering ever since.”
