Second-half comeback gives Shannon victory
Galwegians 16 Shannon 28
Second half tries from David Quinlan and Fionn McLoughlin saw Shannon get back to winning ways in the AIB League Division One, with a 28-16 success at Galwegians' Crowley Park.
Mick Galwey's side, who were edged by Limerick rivals Garryowen last time out, bounced back to move third in the top flight standings.
Poor conditions saw the opening half duelled out by visiting fly-half David Delaney, a former 'Wegians favourite, and John Cleary.
Delaney kicked Shannon into a 9-0 lead with penalties on 15 and 36 minutes, a wonderfully-hit 19th minute drop goal.
Nearing half-time, 'Wegians left wing Cleary punished a pack indiscretion to keep Bernie Kelly's side in it, at just 9-3 down.
On 49 minutes, Delaney dropped another goal before 'Wegians grabbed a controversial converted try.
Number eight Scott Donald brilliantly charged down a Delaney clearance kick to beat John Lacey for the touch down despite Shannon protestations that the veteran full-back had got there first.
'Wegians' lead was short-lived though. Back row Quinlan sniped blindside off a scrum 30 metres out, and with Stephen Keogh ensuring second phase ball, scrum-half Fiach O'Loughlin gave Quinlan the space to sprint over on the hour.
17-10 in front, Delaney and Cleary kicked two penalties each in the closing minutes before left wing McLoughlin scored on 78 minutes, collecting Delaney's clever chip through.
Scorers:
Galwegians: Try: Scott Donald; Con: John Cleary; Pens: Cleary 3
Shannon: Tries: Fionn McLoughlin, David Quinlan; Pens: Delaney 4; Drop goals: Delaney
