Mafi signs two-year deal

The HSBC Waratahs have moved swiftly to secure the outstanding player of the NSW Development Tour of Argentina.

Sydney University’s outside back Winston Mafi has agreed to a two-year deal with the Waratahs.

Mafi was plucked from the Sydney University Shute Shield team for the tour after injury claimed Nathan Grey and Peter Hewat.

“Winston Mafi’s story is quite incredible,” said NSW head coach Ewen McKenzie.

“He spent two years spreading the gospel then returned to Sydney Uni this season without doing a single training session while away.

“Despite that he’s physically impressive and we look forward to stepping up his development as a professional Rugby player.”

Mafi’s pace, skill and elusiveness impressed the NSW coaching staff on tour.

McKenzie said: “Winston took his opportunity with both hands and we see a big future for him if he develops further from here.”

The Waratahs have all but finalised their 2005 Super 12 squad with only a handful of training and HPU contracts to come.
