Lomu could play in Johnson testimonial

Jonah Lomu could be one of the star names on the list to play in Martin Johnson’s testimonial next June.

Jonah Lomu could be one of the star names on the list to play in Martin Johnson’s testimonial next June.

Johnson’s manager Tim Buttermore told New Zealand’s Star-Times having Lomu on the field with the Leicester lock would be hugely beneficial.

Speculation about Lomu’s possible involvement has arisen because clothing company adidas – heavily involved in Johnson’s testimonial year – sponsor both players.

Global rugby manager for adidas, Andrew Gaze, said the company was not pressuring Lomu to be involved on or off the field.

“If it was possible for Jonah to play in the match, we’d be delighted but we have no knowledge if that would happen,” said Gaze.

Lomu eased back into training recently after a kidney transplant last month.

The 55-Test veteran has started to jog lightly and work out in the gym. With his ultimate aim to return to the rugby field.

“I have no idea how far away he is from coming back but it would be great to have him back,” said Buttermore.
