Rugby chiefs hail Back

Neil Back was today hailed for his contribution to England following his decision to retire from international rugby at the end of the RBS 6 Nations Championship.

The 35-year-old Leicester second row forward has told coach Clive Woodward he would not be able to commit himself to the summer tour of New Zealand and Australia.

English Rugby Football Union chief executive Francis Baron said: “Neil’s contribution to the game at all levels has been a massive one and he leaves the England set-up with the best wishes of everyone involved, from the coaching staff, the management, his playing squad colleagues and everyone associated with the RFU.”

RFU president Robert Horner added: “Neil Back’s international and club career with England, the British and Irish Lions and Leicester has been one dominated by success and achievement.

“By maintaining a very strong work ethic, fitness regime and a huge amount of ability he has deserved everything he has derived from the game.

"The medals and cups he has won to date serve to underline what a superb player he has been at international level and will continue to be for his club, Leicester Tigers.”

Back played in six of England’s seven matches in the World Cup in Australia, including the final.

He told the Daily Mirror: “I no longer feel I can commit to the summer tour so I will be retiring from international rugby post-Six Nations.

“I phoned Clive on Friday to tell him that the thought of spending another summer away from my family, allied to the situation at Leicester, had persuaded me that I did not want to tour.

“I knew when I made the phone call that I probably had played my last game for England because I am well aware that Clive has said he will only consider players for the Six Nations who are committed to the tour of New Zealand and Australia.”
