Carlow ensure Lansdowne winless streak goes on
Carlow 24 Lansdowne 24
Co Carlow came from behind to steal what could have been an important win at the end of the season away from relegation-threatened Lansdowne at Oak Park, out-scoring the visitors three tries to two in a 24-all draw.
The visitors did end a six-game losing streak, a record for the club, but ended up having to scramble a late drop goal for a share of the spoils, with Andy Tallon supplying the kick with six minutes remaining.
Carlow, who are level on points with Garryowen, scored a 17th minute try through number 8 Andy Melville, his third try of the season, which was converted by out-half Ben Young.
But two Shane Whelan penalties and a sixth try of the season from flying right winger Fiachra Baynes gave Lansdowne an 11-7 half-time lead.
Carlow answered back quickly after the break with tries from outside centre Tom Bonnefoy and right wing Michael Buckley, both converted by Young to edge in front.
A penalty from Young on the hour mark was cancelled out by a Brian McNamara try for the visitors, converted by Whelan, before Tallon brought a thrilling conclusion with his third successful kick of the season for Lansdowne.
Neither side could steal what would have been an undeserving win, with Lansdowne the most aggrieved, having had the chance to move ahead of St Mary’s in the table with a win.
