Garryowen teach students a lesson
Garryowen 22 UCD 18
Garryowen claimed just their fourth win of the season this afternoon, as they held off a gallant UCD side in a 22-18 win at Dooradoyle.
Sixteen of 26 tries that Garryowen have conceded this season have been away from the Limerick venue and they certainly look a more assured outfit when lining out at home.
Garryowen took advantage of slack positional play by the UCD backs to carve open a third try of the season for flanker Colin Varley on 24 minutes.
A missed conversion by Alan Purcell allowed the students back into the game and full back Philip Bredin touched down before the break to leave the scores at 11-10 in the home side’s favour.
A second try for UCD from captain David Blaney had put the visitors in front with Bredin converting, but a first try of the season for lock Donal Sheahan added to Purcell’s third and fourth penalties to give Garryowen the win.
The Limerick side are now up to 10th in the table.
