Buckingham Palace is becoming familiar territory for Jonny Wilkinson with two visits in the last month now to be followed by a third trip to pick up an OBE.

The Newcastle Falcons fly-half was among 35 players and coaches of the England World Cup-winning rugby squad to be recognised in the New Year’s Honours List, with head coach Clive Woodward receiving a knighthood.

Wilkinson attended a reception at the Palace earlier this month with the squad, returned to collect an MBE three weeks ago and now will go back again for his new honour.

England’s record international points-scorer, whose drop-goal seconds from time decided the Sydney final against Australia, said: “I am thrilled and honoured at the award of an OBE.

“It has been a great year for English rugby, culminating in the World Cup victory, and was a great triumph for the whole squad and management team.

“It is great to see everyone recognised for their achievement.”
