UCD ended Shannon’s unbeaten run in the AIB League with a comprehensive defensive display at Belfield.

Two first-half tries for the students, from Gareth Hayes and Ken Kennedy ensured they led 15-3 at the break.

Shannon winger Tom Cregan kicked his side back into the match with three penalties and John Lacey eventually crossed for a try after 67 minutes to bring the contest right down to the wire.

Cregan had a chance to win it in the final minute but his 50-metre penalty re-bounded off the post.
