World Cup opens with spectacular ceremony

The fifth Rugby World Cup was officially opened with a gala ceremony to thrill the 83,000 crowd at Telstra Stadium.

Mercifully, the rain which threatened to teem down from the Sydney skies did not materialise to dampen the enthusiasm for a 45-minute mix of light, fire, dance and song which produced the most powerful artistic scenes witnessed in Australia since the Olympic Games opened three years ago.
