Wallabies opt for Waugh

Phil Waugh has replaced George Smith as Australia’s openside flanker for Saturday’s international against Wales at the Telstra Stadium in Sydney.

Smith was forced to pull out of the Wallabies squad after sustaining nerve damage in his neck against Ireland last weekend.

NSW Waratahs vice-captain Waugh told the ARU’s website, www.rugby.com.au: “I obviously feel for George because he’s a good friend but starting against Wales is a great opportunity for me and one that I’m looking forward to.”

Queensland back row Daniel Heenan has been promoted to the bench and is set to make his debut with fellow Red David Croft chosen as 23rd man.

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said: “A tough call because David is a very good player but this is a good chance for Daniel to take the next step after playing a full Super 12 season and two years of Australia A representation.

“We also considered Mat Rogers for selection and we’ve been happy with his progress but we opted to retain the same backline.
