Speculation over Williams for Scotland job

Matt Williams may have made a mistake in admitting to a meeting with the Scottish RFU his interest in relation to becoming Ian McGeechan's successor in Scotland.

Williams said: "I would not want to do anything to undermine Leinster or the Irish Rugby Union while also not wishing to be presumptious about the Scottish post in any way.

"This is especially the case with Leinster players about to go off on tour with Ireland while I am about to drive to Limerick to coach one of the trial teams."

In hindsight, he may realise that he should have offered a simple no comment about the situation.

Already, the IRFU will be looking into alternatives should Williams jump ship.

In that case, Leinster asssitant coach Willie Anderson would be a front-runner to succeed the Australian.
