Galwegians return to winning ways
Galwegians 20 UCD 6
Galwegians returned to winning ways with a comfortable victory over UCD in miserable conditions at Crowley park.
A win was never in doubt after right wing Nigel Carolan notched the home side¹s second try 16 minutes into a second half which Galwegians dominated.
A sluggish first half in which both sides struggled in the muddy conditions saw Galwegians hold a slender 5 - 3 lead, courtesy of a 34th minute try from scrumhalf Alec Page.
The home side had dominated the set pieces, but it was UCD who opened the scoring with a 16th minute penalty from outhalf Eoghan Hickey, having missed an earier 2nd minute effort.
However Galwegians, more dominant in the line-outs and scrums, finally made the breakthrough when Page dived over from a close-in ruck.
Galwegians upped the tempo in the second half, utilising the strength of their pack in which Peter Bracken and Johnny O¹Connor featured prominantly.
However the students¹ No 8 Des Dillon tried to inspire his team to some continuity, but they never looked like breaching the Galwegians¹ cover. Hickey kicked his second penalty on 73 minutes after missing a 61st minute effort, but Galwegians finished with a well deserved try from centre Mervyn
Murphy, converted by Gavin Duffy to secure a comfortable victory in their search for a top four place.
