England to host U21 World Cup

England will host rugby union’s Under-21 World Cup later this year.

The 12-nation tournament is scheduled between June 13 and 29, International Rugby Board officials announced today.

Venues have yet to be confirmed, but the IRB say matches will take place in the Oxfordshire region.

Invitations have been issued to Ireland, Wales, Scotland, France, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Canada, Argentina and Japan.

Last year’s inaugural event was won by host nation South Africa.

Three players from last year’s tournament – South Africans Pat Barnard and Clyde Rathbone, together with New Zealand’s Sam Tuitupou – will be vying for the IRB Under-21 player of the year award in London on January 26.

“Last year’s tournament in South Africa proved a huge success, and we are looking forward to another great event in England this year,” said IRB chief executive Mike Miller.

“The IRB Under-21 World Cup, as well as being a tournament of the highest quality in its own right, continues to produce young players who are better prepared to represent their country at senior level.”

The IRB’s announcement comes with Twickenham top brass engaged in the bidding process to stage Rugby World Cup 2007.

The English Rugby Football Union are competing with France for the right to host the sport’s showpiece event.
