Edinburgh reach quarter-finals

Edinburgh's 30-20 victory over Ebbw Vale guaranteed their place in the Celtic League quarter-finals.

The Scots scored three tries to two, but Ebbw Vale were ahead 13-10 at half-time.

Vale full-back Mark Meenan had scored all his side's points.

The former Irish schools international put his side 3-0 up early on but a penalty by Edinburgh's Brendan Laney levelled the scores.

Edinburgh got the first try on the half-hour as the bigger Scottish pack moved the ball downfield before it was spun out to wing Simon Webster to go over in the corner.

Vale responded when Scott Mitchell threw a long pass out to Meenan who showed the strength to power over. He added the conversion to his own try and then stroked over a penalty for a 13-10 half time score.

But Edinburgh showed why they are league leaders by blitzing Vale with 13 points straight after half-time including a try by Simon Taylor who went over in the corner.

Laney then added the conversion as well as his second and third penalty to make it 13-23.

The Scots then took control of the game as they kept Vale deep in their own territory for most of the second half. Their third try with five minutes to go killed off the home side as the Scots pack drove over in numbers and replacement scrum-half Mike Blair was the last man up with the ball.

Laney's conversion made it 30-13 before Vale's Mitchell got a consolation try right at the end which Meenan converted to make it 30-20.
