Lions Tour: Night out costly for Reds pair

Queensland players Nathan Williams and Shane Drahm are nursing more than hangovers after they were dumped from the Reds line-up to meet the Lions on Saturday for disciplinary reasons.

The pair missed a curfew and were out to almost dawn after the Queensland President’s XV 83-6 loss to the Lions in Townsville on Tuesday night. It has cost Williams a probable starting spot at fullback, while Drahm would have started from the bench with Wallaby inside-centre Elton Flatley to start at five-eighth.

The pair were sprung when McBain was leaving the team hotel to board an early flight back to Brisbane. It’s not the first time Williams has felt the heat from Reds management and coach Mark McBain said Wednesday morning’s effort just "wasn’t good enough".

"They should have known better," McBain said. "Going out like that on a Tuesday night before a Saturday night game simply isn't on."

South club player Michael Tebrutt comes into the side at fullback, while Easts five-eighth Andrew Scotney replaces Drahm on the bench.

Reds: Michael Tabrett, Junior Pelesafa, Daniel Herbert (captain), Steve Kefu, David McCallum, Elton Flatley, Sam Cordingley, Toutai Kefu, David Croft, Matt Cockbain, Mark Connors, Nathan Sharpe, Glenn Panoho, Michael Foley, Nick Stiles.

Replacements: Ben Wakely, Andrew Scotney, Jason Ramsamy, John Roe, Mike Mitchell, Simon Kerr, Sean Hardman.
