Rugby: Cork Con prove to be too strong

Old Crescent 20, Cork Con 41

Cork Con in the end proved too strong for Old Crescent in a high-scoring match at Rosbrien.

Billy Treacy, the old Crescent full-back put over three penalties in the first half with Ronan O'Gara putting over a penalty for Cork Con, which left the half-time score of 9-3 to Old Crescent.

Cork Con began to dominate matters in the second half with Donncha O'Callaghan going in for a try almost on the resumption. O'Gara converted and Con went into a 10-9 lead.

O'Gara put over a second penalty, followed by another from Billy Treacy, and there was just a point between the sides.

However, Con regained the lead with an opportunist try from Brian Walsh, converted by O'Gara to make it 20-12 to the Cork side.

Treacy put over his fourth penalty but then Con went 12 ahead when Brian O'Meara linked with man of the match Mick O'Driscoll who scored the try.

O'Gara converted to make it 27-15. Ten minutes to go and Con wrapped it up when Mick O'Driscoll broke from inside his own 22, linked with Walsh who made it to the half-way line, before transferring to Derek Dillon, who ran in for the game's best try.

O'Gara put up a huge garryowen which hit the crossbar and Con centre Conor Mahony was up to take the ball and score. O'Gara converted to make it 41-15.

Old Crescent then got a consolation try from Billy Treacy.
