Presentation Brothers endure dreadful conditions to take Munster Schools Senior Cup

PBC ... 11, Glenstal ... 3: Presentation Brothers joined their Cork neighbours at the top of the Clayton Hotels Munster Schools Senior Cup honours list when they enjoyed a fully deserved 11-3 victory over Glenstal in a Thomond Park final spoiled by incessant, torrential rain.

The game proved highly entertaining in spite of the elements and there was never any serious doubt but that Pres would go on to capture the title for the 29th time.

In fact, Glenstal hardly got out of their own half in the entire final 35 minutes as Pres, inspiringly led by their number eight and captain Jack O’Sullivan, claimed majority possession and used it sensibly to snuff out any chance of a Glenstal rally.

Centre Sean French did all the scoring for Pres.

He put them in front with an early penalty and even though Glenstal out-half B en Healy equalised with a fine kick, the Cork boys engineered the game’s only try when O’Sullivan broke off the back of a scrum on the “Glen” line and passed to French who took a lovely line and beat the cover with a degree of ease.

French missed the conversion when the ball was blown over as he took his run up and Pres duly turned over 8-3 in front.

Glenstal tried manfully to get back into the game as the second half went on but they struggled badly in the line-outs where Conan O’Sullivan and Shane Downes were outstanding for the winners.

Pres did have one decidedly anxious moment when Glenstal flanker Conor Booth broke clear from a ruck in his own 22 before racing up to the halfway line where he ran out of support and having been tackled, was penalised for holding on.

And on the stroke of full-time, French wrapped it all up with his second penalty.
