Munsters have jumped ahead of the students into second, and with their remaining two matches (away to Garryowen, and at home to Lansdowne) in Limerick.

Although they were not at their best, Young Munster stepped up considerably on their performance a week earlier when they lost heavily to Clontarf and held a considerable advantage over the visitors at set scrum-time.

Ultimately, tries from Craig O’Hanlon, Dan Goggin, and Peter Meyer condemned Noel McNamara’s youngsters to their third straight defeat.

Traditionally, Young Munster are strong up front but this current side also boasts a speedy, hard running back division and produced a fine all-round performance that delighted head coach David Corkery.

“UCD were second in the table and we were third and we knew if we won we would go ahead of them,” said the former Ireland wing-forward.

“There was a bit of a knee jerk reaction to last week and also going back to September when they beat us by 60-odd points. That hurts and it was spoken about and then put to one side.

“Alan Ross came in for Alan Kennedy and had a fantastic game and Gearoid Lyons is growing in confidence. Apart from last week, we’re forgetting how to lose games and even the second 40 minutes of last week’s game, we won it 3-1 in tries, and continued in that vein.

“We knew if we stopped UCD’s running threat and made our tackles, that we’d win the game.”

Corkery also emphasised that UCD remain a good team and predicted that there was every chance they could meet again in the knockout stages.

“The target before the game was a home semi-final. All you can ask for as a coach and a player is that the future is in your own hands.

“We weren’t depending on anyone to win or to lose. I think our backs are stronger than our forwards, we have a threat out there, Gearoid Lyons, Dan Goggin, guys who were missing like David O’Mahony, Diarmuid McCarthy, Abrie Griesel.”
