Presentation set up a derby semi-final with old rivals Christians after powering past Bandon in their Munster Schools Senior Cup quarter-final yesterday.
It wasn’t as easy as the first round rout against St Clement’s, but then Presentation wouldn’t have expected so, given Bandon Grammar managed to get through to this stage by knocking out a decent side with a big reputation, St Munchin’s College.
The city side were never really pushed beyond the bounds at Musgrave Park yesterday, though their west Cork challengers did make a decent game of it at times.
It was a game that slipped away gradually rather than dramatically from Bandon against a Pres side with more quality through the ranks.
Peter Sylvester kicked an opening penalty in two minutes before Jonathon Wren scored the first try and Harry Shanahan (converted by Sylvester) grabbed a second for a 15-0 lead.
Sean Hudson kicked a penalty for Bandon but Sylvester added a penalty to give Pres an 18-3 lead at half time. After that, Jack O’Shea rolled over for a try, followed by a penalty try. Sylvester converted both to secure a 32-3 lead.
Eoin O’Shea and Sylvester combined to build up that lead further before Bandon got some reward through a Gavin Coombes try, converted by Sean Hudson.
Meanwhile, eight points from the boot of captain Mick O’Gara were crucial at Donnybrook yesterday when Presentation College, Bray recorded a 13-8 victory against Gonzaga College in the Leinster Schools Junior Cup first round. Pres Bray opened their account on six minutes with an expertly-struck penalty from O’Gara, a lead they held to half-time.
Gonzaga finally levelled matters with a successful 39th-minute place-kick from scrum-half Jack Connolly. Seven minutes later, winger Henry Higgins crossed over on the right-flank for an unconverted five-pointer.
Bray hit back on 50 minutes, when full-back Samuel O’Dowd finished off a sweeping move in the left-corner.
O’Gara followed up his superb touchline conversion with a routine penalty five minutes from time.
