Carter set to be unveiled as Sexton’s Racing replacement

New Zealand legend Dan Carter is set to be unveiled as Jonathan Sexton’s replacement at Racing Metro this morning.

The 102-Test All Black has agreed to join the Top 14 side after next year’s World Cup and is expected to pocket £1 million (€1.2m) a season with the Paris outfit.

Carter has played precious little rugby for the All Blacks, Crusaders and Canterbury in the past 12 months as he struggled with injuries.

Racing Metro chairman Jacky Lorenzetti, a long time admirer of the New Zealand, said earlier this year that was prepared to ink a deal if coaches Laurent Labit and Laurent Travers supported the move.

But the decision of Sexton to return to Leinster at the season’s end forced Racing Metro to go in search of an out-half.

The club already have French international Remi Tales on their books next season.

French rivals Toulon along with a number of clubs in Japan and England were reportedly interested in securing Carter’s services but Racing emerged victorious.

Carter is no stranger to the rigours of the Top 14 after spending seven months with Perpignan in 2008. He played five games before suffering a partial rupture of his Achilles tendon against Stade Francais on January 2009.

Carter has endured a miserable spell in recent months with a series of leg injuries.

Named in the squad for the end-of-year tour, Carter played against the USA and Scotland rather than England and Wales.

He is the leading all-time points scorer in international rugby with 1457 Test points and is also the highest points scorer in Super Rugby history.
