Powerful Munsters brush off weak Thomond challenge

Prospects of an upset were effectively ended by the third minute when Munsters’ powerful number eight, Sean Rennison, scampered over for the first of the home side’s three tries.

Limerick Charity Cup winners Thomond, who are flying high in Division 2A of the All-Ireland League, had to no answer to the intensity, power and pace of their 1A opponents, as fit-again centre Kolio Hifo added an exciting mix of physicality, high work rate and pace to Munsters’ midfield.

Thomond’s only points of a disappointingly one-sided quarter-final came courtesy of a penalty from full-back Dean O’Brien on 15 minutes.

By then John Staunton’s Young Munster side were 10-0 to the good. Exciting young out-half Gearoid Lyons added a 12th minute penalty to his earlier conversion of Rennison’s try.

Munsters’ led this Limerick derby 16-3 at half-time, with Lyons kicking further penalties in the 20th minute and just before the break.

2010 Munster Senior Cup winners Young Munster had a second try on 59 minutes through hooker Ger Slattery following a brilliantly-executed maul.

Lyons again converted and he also added the extras on the hour mark after replacement David O’Mahony showed a terrific turn of pace to score a fine individual try.

Young Munster are away to fellow All-Ireland League Division 1A side Cork Constitution in the last four on Saturday, December 13.

Before that, the Greenfields side faces a crucial AIL top flight tie with Clontarf at Clifford Park in six days time.
