It was Rob Penney’s last European Cup link with Munster and he was, naturally, hugely disappointed after the semi-final defeat by champions Toulon.

For the second time in 12 months Munster came up short. For the second time they lost out because they gave away too many penalties and made too many unforced errors in the first 30 minutes.

“We gave away some crucial scrum penalties,” Penney said. “After two minutes we had a scrum right on their line that was a given penalty against us.
