O’Mahony makes the difference for gutsy Garryowen

Dolphin 6 Garryowen 15

The open side dotted down early in each half while fly-half Andrew O’Byrne added a penalty and conversion which proved enough for the Limerick side to claim the spoils.

Dolphin fly-half Barry Keeshan kicked penalties in each half to keep Dolphin in contention. But the hosts only really threatened the Garryowen line on one occasion, when prop Dave Hartnett was help up after crashing over, and the lead was never in danger after O’Mahony’s second try on fifty minutes.

With the Dooradoyle outfit and Dolphin both safe from relegation and Lansdowne already crowned champions there was little beyond bragging rights on offer, but Garryowen head coach Tom Tierney said his team had targeted this fixture and he was delighted with the performance they produced in trying conditions.

“We knew with about three or four matches to go that we were safe from relegation and obviously without the top four [play-offs] to play for it’s very hard to get the boys up for it,” he commented after the game. But we earmarked today. We’ve got another match against Clontarf next week to finish off the season, so we wanted to put in a really good performance and thankfully the lads did, it was very good, technically very good in very bad conditions so we’re very pleased.

“Going into this game we knew we had to be at our very best because Dolphin were on a four game winning streak, they were the form team in the league so we really had to be on our guard.

“We didn’t want the season to just slip away and thankfully the boys stood up today and played really good stuff.

“Playing into the wind and the rain in the first half we had to focus on our first phase and the accuracy of that first phase and to get the upper hand in the scrum and the lineout was very pleasing.

“It laid the foundation to kick on in the second half, we just trusted our defence in the second half and came out on top.”

Dolphin travel to Old Belvedere next weekend for their final game while Garryowen entertain Clontarf.
