Munster blow as Leamy set to retire

Irish international Denis Leamy is the latest Munster player set to be forced to retire through injury, the news expected to be confirmed today.

The 30-year old saw a specialist last week in a bid to save his career after the Tipperary native struggled to recover from a serious hip injury which brought his season to a halt in January when he had to go for an operation.

His expected retirement is another blow to Munster after a dreadful season which also saw them lose warriors like Jerry Flannery and David Wallace to injury, while Mick O’Driscoll also announced his retirement weeks ago.

Leamy, who signed a two-year contract extension in February, was capped 57 times and played his last match for Ireland against Wales in the World Cup. He played 145 times for Munster, winning Heineken Cup medals in 2006 and 2008, having made his debut in 2002 when he was 19.
