Munster’s iconic Thomond Park will host Ireland’s plum tie of the 2013 Rugby League World Cup against Australia.

Limerick’s shrine to rugby union will break new ground next year when it stages a rugby league World Cup fixture in the Republic of Ireland. Belfast hosted one game during the 2000 World Cup, as did Dublin, but tournament organisers described the latest announcement as an “exciting opportunity” for the development of the game in Ireland and are convinced the tie, to be staged sometime in November 2013, will be a resounding success.

“It’s not a gamble to stage a World Cup game in Ireland,” said Richard Lewis, Chairman of 2013 RLWC2013 Ltd.
